BOTOX® gives a temporary paralysis to the underlying facial muscle movement by blocking the pathway for proper muscle contraction. As a result, the skin overlying these facial muscles will appear smoother and the wrinkles softened. The forehead, glabella (between the eyebrows) and crow’s feet lines respond well to relaxation of the underlying muscles with BOTOX®. BOTOX® is also injected into the skin to treat the symptoms of severe underarm sweating (severe primary axillary hyperhidrosis).
Most clients begin to notice an onset within 2 days of treatment but typically a maximal onset is seen within 5-7 days. The full effect of relaxing the targeted muscles is in place by 14 days. If you do not see results after one week, you may have antibodies to the toxin or may need additional units.
BOTOX® on average typically lasts 3-4 months, and may last longer in certain individuals. If you are pleased with your BOTOX® treatment you may want to consider a regular treatment schedule. We recommend consistent BOTOX® re-treatment to maintain the maximum desired effect.
BOTOX® is injected using a very fine needle. There is minimal discomfort and no recovery time necessary. The entire procedure takes approximately 10-15 minutes. The discomfort is minimal and the edge can be taken off with an ice compress just prior to injection. Topical numbing cream is typically not necessary. Bruising may occur – avoid anti-platelets (aspirin-like products) or anti-coagulants (blood thinners) for 1 week prior to treatment to minimize bruising.
Do not take BOTOX® if you are allergic to any of the ingredients in BOTOX® or have a skin infection at the planned injection site. Patients with Myasthenia Gravis, Lambert-Eaton syndrome, or ALS often referred to as Lou Gehrig’s Disease should not have BOTOX®, as well as pregnant or breast feeding women. Please see BOTOX® Product and Safety information including Boxed Warning and Medication Guide. Thanks so much,Lori Keller, BSN,RN
When you squint or frown, the muscles between your brows contract, causing the skin to furrow and fold. Over time, as the skin ages and loses some of its elasticity these repeated contractions can cause persistent frown lines. Botulinum toxin type A– the active ingredient in Xeomin– acts on nerve endings in muscles to prevent muscle fibers from contracting. By reducing these contractions, Xeomin can temporarily reduce the lines of your forehead between your brows.
Most clients begin to notice an onset within 5 days of treatment but typically a maximal onset is seen within 7-10 days. Maximum effect occurs at 30 days. If you do not see the results you desire after one week you may need additional units.
